What I’ve learned is that you cannot help a person in crisis if you bring yourself to where they are emotionally. What value are you in that moment if you start passing out and whaling louder than the person who is confiding in you? Your job is to soothe. To have compassion without empathisizing, or putting yourself in their shoes. Remind yourself, and them, that all is well. Days later, their grief can still hit you in the chest, but all is well.
