Bear with me for another Adele post.
25 definitely isn’t 21. I felt the former album more at my core. (And I was single at the time – not going through a breakup. I know her career blew up on what many deem ‘break up music.’) Nevertheless, I am in love. Really, she can do no wrong! Just today, she broke the record for most first-week album sales in the U.S. (ever – in history). She’s a baaaad mamma jamma.
I have my favorites on 25 though. ‘When We Were Young’ is one of them. This song reminds me of trying to hold on to memories – and stories, and moments, movies, songs, and scents – everything that feels like home about a lover. Sometimes desperate attempts. After all, being in a romantic relationship – and ending relationships is on some level all about facing fears. Right? And oh, how I will always remember my first love…
(Partial) Lyrics:
“When We Were Young”
Everybody loves the things you do
From the way you talk
To the way you move
Everybody here is watching you
Cause you feel like home
You’re like a dream come true
But if by chance you’re here alone
Can I have a moment
Before I go?
Cause I’ve been by myself all night long
Hoping you’re someone I used to know
You look like a movie
You sound like a song
My God, this reminds me
Of when we were young
Let me photograph you in this light
In case it is the last time
That we might be exactly like we were
Before we realized
We were sad of getting old
It made us restless
It was just like a movie
It was just like a song
I was so scared to face my fears
Cause nobody told me that you’d be here
And I swear you moved overseas
That’s what you said, when you left me
You still look like a movie
You still sound like a song
My God, this reminds me
Of when we were young
Let me photograph you in this light
In case it is the last time
That we might be exactly like we were
Before we realized
We were sad of getting old
It made us restless
It was just like a movie
It was just like a song
When we were young
When we were young
When we were young
When we were young

Lol. This was not about you girl. I’m just replaying the album and thinking (because that’s what I do). Thank you for reading. You might like the song.

I have yet to listen to this album. I have to be in a mood to listen to emotional music. Adele is great though.

I feel you. Sometimes her lyrics take you somewhere you just don’t feel like going. And then a crazy thing happens – I find myself just playing the songs over and over again. I think that’s part of her appeal.

I actually have made a conscious effort to not get this album. I’ve only listened to singles on the radio but I haven’t downloaded any songs or tried to buy the album. I just have a feeling that this album is going to make me feel things that I’m avoiding. Hello didn’t affect me at all but this song had me near calling my ex. Maybe I’ll give 25 a listen when I’m more secure in my current relationship.

The album is pretty good, but not as good as 21. I think every song on 21 was just to touching and especially inspiring as a writer. I was really impressed with the lyrics. I became an Adele fan. On 25, there are a couple of tracks I skip still. But take a listen anyway! It’s a mix this time, not all heartbreak, but a general sense that she’s been unhappy with her life. It’s like – you have everything – why are you still writing about how you wish your life was better? But like all art, inspiration hits you and you go with it. Some of it is inspired by her new baby, childhood, etc.
