V is for “Vagina”

I got a Brazilian bikini wax for the first time last night. I love the results and I’ve already scheduled my next appointment!

But wait, V is really for Valentine’s Day, right? And not “vagina.” Because today is February 14th? Are you celebrating love?

In a relationship or not, I’ve never been too fond of the V-day charade. Hmm. I just thought back to grade school (first, second grade, etc.), when I could never afford those little heart-shape cards that kids gave out to the whole class, or at minimum, their best friends. I felt poor and dejected. Seems random, but maybe there’s a connection. Then again, I’m all the way anti-commercial holidays now. They feel forced – contrived,  and like a good way to get folks to spend money…

Aside from that, too many women determine their self-worth (or at least ponder it for a day) by what their partner does for them on this day. Or by their relationship status. One thing has nothing to do with the other.

Last year, I went to a burlesque show – alone. How’s that for a V-day date with myself? Watching voluptuous Black women strip down to tittie tassels. I wrote about how little they seemed to care about cellulite, stretch marks, and dimples on their thighs. And how some of us are less body conscious than others. But I digress.

If you’re celebrating Valentine’s Day, I hope you enjoy it. Since it’s a “day for lovers,” I hope you get all the love you can handle – even if it’s self-love, or even self-pleasure. Love yourself first. Treat yourself to some waxing if you dare. Go bare!

As for me, I’ll get to spend some quiet time with someone special. I’m excited.

Enjoy! ♥♥♥

What are your thoughts on Valentine’s Day? Are you celebrating? How so? Is the “holiday” overrated? If you’re single, what are your plans?

  1. Happy Valentine’s Day, Shakiyla! I agree, there’s too much riding on this one day. It shouldn’t have such a pronounced impact on anyones self worth. I think that I’ll kick back today and enjoy it, too, minus the bikini waxing. That hurt just reading about it.

  2. I am glad that you are spending your day with someone special. As for me, valentine’s day shouldn’t be limited to just one day. It should be through out the year. Do something on a random day. (Hey honey, I have something planned special for us today. So clear your schedule, put something nice on and let’s go.

  3. Yes indeed.

  4. A belated Happy Valentine’s Day wish is in order. =)

Mine was a very quiet day spent writing my thoughts to a close friend from whom I had to step back and away. Such is life, though; people come come and people go. We’re all in each other’s lives for a reason, a season, or perhaps in some cases, a lifetime.

I agree with magnus (and you, too) in that love should be celebrated and embraced with every day that passes, not just relegated to one specific day. Although the Don Quixote romantic in me enjoys tilting at windmills on V-Day, I much prefer to celebrate all that love is (and should be) throughout the year. Even a small note, written with words from the heart and soul, is more precious a gift than diamonds and pearls. At least in my opinion.

I hope you did have a wonderful weekend, though, Shakiyla. =)

    • Thank u! Happy belated. I was just pondering that “reason, season, lifetime” thing this morning.” It’s only in hindsight that you’re able to really assess where people fall. Relationships take turns. And yes, love is to be celebrated all year, and demonstrated thru even the smallest deeds and gestures. Love is a choice. (Read about that yesterday too!)

  5. This was the first year we actually went out. We usually stay home, make dinner and watchmovies/get drunk. I wanted to do something different plus it was a place we have been talking about. I think guys get caught up with doing extras on Valentines day. When you have a girl, you can go above and beyond if you want to. It’s when you just started dating and you have poems, chocolate, teddy’s bears and jewelry. Once you put yourself in a trick/simp bag, you can never get out. Balance is key
